Us is one of those movies that sticks with you. Not so much for the action or the dialogue, but for the story itself. It’s one of those movies that once you finish watching it, you’ll want to go back and watch it again to find out all the things you missed. That being said, it’s a great movie to add to your collection, not just for the replay value, but also for the special features.
Us follows the story of a family on vacation who suddenly find their lives turned upside down when their doppelgängers appear at the door and begin to terrorize them. As they try to figure out what’s going on, they quickly realize what is happening to them, is happening all over, and that there might not be any escape. Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke star in the film by Jordan Peele (Get Out), and be warned, it twists and turns and will keep your mind occupied for the entire one hour and fifty-six minutes, and well beyond.
When Jordan Peele moved away from comedy and starting making horror films, no one knew what to expect. Get Out however was one of 2017’s most buzzed about films, and won Peele an Oscar for Best Screenplay. From there he went on to take over the reigns of The Twilight Zone, and given the ability to make the films he wanted to make. Us is one of them. Like Get Out, Us needs to be discussed once you’ve watched it. You want to tell people what you think, and see how they interpreted it. If you watched it by yourself however, you don’t get to have that. Thankfully the Bluray has several behind the scenes featurettes that discuss certain aspects of the movie, including how they filmed it, a look at the themes and imagery, and even why certain colours were chosen. You get an inside glimpse into the world of Us that certainly helps with how you watch the film. Of course after watching them, you’ll want to go back and watch the film again. Peele does an amazing job at putting you in the story with his characters, and setting the atmosphere just right. Too many times these days horror movie directors go for the shock value instead of creeping you out, but Peele isn’t one of them. The picture and sound quality on the disc are amazing as well, and nothing is lost in the transfer from the big screen to your home. You get the same creepy feeling at home as you do at the theatre. And as a nice bonus, to help lighten your mood afterwards, there are some nice outtakes as well.
Us is one of the year’s best films so far, and is sure to be up for a few awards next year. It’s a classic you will want to own today
