You had to know it would eventually happen again. Best friends Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are set to re-team for a new film called The Last Duel. The duo co-wrote the script with Nicole Holofcener, and will produce and star in the feature, and now it’s been announced that Oscar nominated director Ridley Scott will be taking the reigns.
It’s been known for awhile that the film was setup at Fox, but it had been sitting on the back-burner until recently. With the Fox/Disney merger though, it’s not clear if Disney is still planning on releasing it, or if they will allow it to be shopped elsewhere.
The Last Duel takes place in 14th century France, and follows the story of a man who returns from war to discover that a friend has raped his wife. Even though his wife isn’t believed by a lot of people, the man appeals to the king of France to be able to fight a duel to the death to decide the accused man’s fate. The duel becomes the last legally sanctioned fight of its kind in France.
Damon and Affleck won an Oscar together for co-writing 1997’s Good Will Hunting, a film they also co-starred in. They’ve also appeared together in such films as Dogma and The Martian. The pair have been linked since going to school together.
At this point it’s not clear as to when production for the film will begin, but with the announcement of Scott’s participation it’s a good bet that it will be sometime soon.
