The Oscars this year may not have much in the way of surprises when it comes to acting awards. It’s a rare occasion when the acting trophies at multiple shows are won by the same group of people, but so far that’s what happening. Joaquin Phoenix, Renee Zellweger, Brad Pitt and Laura Dern have all won a Golden Globe, a Critics Choice Award and now a Screen Actors Award as well. All that’s left for a clean sweep is an Oscar, which will be presented on February 9th.
Phoenix won his third Best Actor trophy at last night’s SAG awards for his portrayal of the Batman villain The Joker. During his acceptance speech he recognized another actor who won an Oscar for playing the same role. “I’m standing here on the shoulders of my favorite actor, Heath Ledger,” he said.
Judy marks Renee Zellweger’s return to the spotlight, and in it she plays legendary Hollywood actress Judy Garland. In the film Zellweger captures Garland’s final years, and even sang her iconic songs. “I feel so lucky to be a member of this family of storytellers, who gets to do work that reflects the experience of being human and fosters understanding, and empathy and unity, and, with some luck, maybe pushes history a little bit closer to the light,” she said as she accepted the award.
On the other side of thing, Brad Pitt won another Supporting Actor trophy for his role in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, who went on to joke that “I’ve got to add this to my Tinder profile.” Laura Dern followed suit by winning Best Supporting Actress for Marriage Story, and during her emotional speech she thanked her famous parents Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd.
The only downside to all four actors and actresses winning for a third time in a row is that if any of them fail to win the Oscar it will be considered a huge upset and disappointment. Granted, stranger things have happened at the Oscars before.
